I may have pushed you to study harder, yet, I regret it not for I know that you were able to see that YOU CAN DO IT ON YOUR OWN!

BURNING LIGHTS BY CHRIS TOMLIN

I have always been a fan of Chris Tomlin's music. From his "Indescribable" sound to the classic "How Great is Our God", Chris' gift of music never fails to deliver the goods, impressing the critics and moving the hearts of soul winners everywhere. His amazing storytelling definitely touches the heart of his listeners. Its impact is seen on how his ministry has flourished and blessed by his Audience of One. This year is an exciting time for the man as he just released his seventh studio album aptly titled, "Burning Lights" which charted at #1 in the Billboard 200 (all across genres). His songs were witnesses to my journey with the Lord. They were testaments to God's faithfulness and love. Without further ado, I now present to you a special countdown of the five (5) most played tracks in my mp3 player from #BURNINGLIGHTS!

5) CROWN HIM (MAJESTY) (feat. Kari Jobe): This is a contemporary approach to one of my most favorite hymns "Crown Him With Many Crowns." The new bridge brings the power of the song to new heights as we worship and prostrate ourselves at the throne of the Crowned King.

4) COUNTLESS WONDERS: "Your beauty fills the sky/ Your glory reigns in brilliant light/ Great God of countless wonders/ I will lift my eyes." The chorus of this music strikes a chord in my heart. It strengthens the weak to gaze upon the wonders of God's creation and see that the Maker of heaven and earth is Lord of all that is seen and unseen.

3) THANK YOU GOD FOR SAVING ME (feat. Phil Wickham): A collaboration of two Christian musical greats, this song of gratitude reflects back on God's salvific power and man's humility, acknowledging that it was God alone who made salvation possible for all men.

2) WHOM SHALL I FEAR (GOD OF ANGEL ARMIES): This song echoes Psalm 27:1 which says, "The LORD is my light and my salvation--whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life--of whom shall I be afraid?" Need I say more?! I'll just say...AMEN!

1) SOVEREIGN: If there is one song (in a long time) that mirrors my faith in God and in his ways, this song would be it. It throws an astounding resignation to God's sovereign will regardless of situations and circumstances. The song's chorus reminds me to TRUST, and to NOT falter in relying in God's sovereign grace and love.

Burning Lights is one of the most theologically succinct contemporary Christian albums I've heard in years; not discounting the fact that it makes us aware of who are in the presence of an infinite and loving Savior. Be sure to head on to Itunes store and your record bars and purchase a copy of this worthy album!

FEARLESS

(from searchquotes.com)
Every time I would see people who are abused, who are fooled and made as though they are possessions of others, I would feel uncomfortable and agitated. Yes, I cannot look at injustice, much less tolerate the abuses of the powerful, to the extent of demeaning the lives of the oppressed, the downtrodden, and the exploited.

I have always believed in the equality of men. I have always resigned to the idea that we are created to be in harmony with each other. I have always thought that utopia is possible on earth. I guess that is the ideal- and the ideal is far from the concept of reality on earth. Yet, I strive at least to be fair in dealing with people around me; to make sure that I abuse and use no one for my own gain, but to be selfless and altruistic at all times, and sacrificial if necessary.

(from tumbler.com)

There goes my idealism of how people should be. Yet, my disillusionment troubles me as I find myself seeing no concept of fairness and integrity even for a day. How in the world should I act when I see others take advantage of the weaknesses of their fellows? How do I help the ones who are fighting for what is TRUE AND RIGHT? Maybe I got no power on earth to change and rehabilitate the tarnished system of the fools. Yet, I find myself a fool as well for tolerating what has to be stopped. Then I find myself breathing the air of the antagonists. I can't let this continue. At least that's what I say to myself. But my heart breaks when I can't do anything to help.....when help is all we need to aid our friends.

I find myself convincing and believing in theodicy.  Alas! that is all I've got to calm my anguished spirit! No one has the monopoly of life. My dry bones will attest even to this truth. But till my fellows are freed and are living the life they are meant to live and enjoy, I'll look no further to help their ailing souls. I am here. God will deliver. I will not fear. My soul will argue with the wicked and the God of angel armies will uphold righteousness and make sure that in the creation order, THE GOOD WILL ALWAYS TRIUMPH OVER EVIL!

What is Your Life Philosophy?

(image from http://oposipe.zzl.org)
Teaching Philosophy in passing as a topic in my Humanities I class was tough. And describing it as tough is an understatement. Most of my students are fresh high school graduates and they do not really think about the ideas of truth, reality, ethics, metaphysics and all the stuff related to these seriously, much less, even take a pause to realize how their own worldview has affected the way they think, act and reflect upon life itself.

Nonetheless, all these ideas have a bearing on how they make their own philosophy of life. Whether they put it into writing or not, they definitely have their own. For one, how they decide on things are affected by the norms in their society, their beliefs, their values and their outlook. Dare I say that hopefully, I was able to awaken in their hearts and minds that young as they are, they MUST KNOW and ACT based on their beliefs and deepest convictions.

Here is a good reading as you ponder upon your own life philosophy => http://www.scotthyoung.com/blog/2007/06/26/10-steps-to-developing-a-meaningful-life-philosophy

TO MY STUDENTS, here's a homework for you to do. Write your own philosophy of life with the title, "My Life Philosophy". IT SHOULD BE typewritten in a short bond paper (ONE PAGE ONLY), left justified, font times new roman size 12 and should be at least 300 words. PLAGIARISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. It should encapsulate your philosophy about the following:

1. LIFE: How do you view and value life itself? How do you see yourself as a part of nature and the universal creation? (How do see yourself as a member of the creation? Explain your meaning of life and its value.)
2. HAPPINESS: What is happiness/joy for you and how do you plan to take hold of this in your life? (How do you achieve happiness, satisfaction and live life to its fullest?)
3. TRUTH/REALITY: What is your truth and how do you make this truth tangible in your life? (Explain your truth in relation to how you live it.)

My prayer is for you all to take a moment to reflect and contemplate on that which is significant, that which holds priority in your life and that which makes you LIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE ITSELF.

Explore and allow not yourselves to be burdened. Think and interact with your soul as you ponder on that which has the highest value in this world. As we face a new year, I hope this would tremendously benefit you all in facing life head on...

Live by a philosophical reflection, not a mere new year's resolution ^__^

CHEERS! IT'S CHRISTMAS!

When the child Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a throng of angels gathered in the heavens singing of the blessed news of the birth of mankind’s Savior.

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
–Luke 2:14

This good news has been celebrated since then and man has not enervated yet of remembering the hope that he has.

The hope in the celebration lies in the CHRIST of the Christmas season. It may well be remembered that because of man’s inability to save himself from eternal damnation, God the Father deemed it necessary to send his Begotten, to live just like one of us and suffer and experience the sting of death in order to breathe life to his beloved creation.

Whatever happened to our celebration of the season calls for a deeper reflection. We have made Christmas too commercial and its essence has been overshadowed by our busyness of preparing gifts and engaging ourselves in parties divorced from what it actually meant in the first place.

May we altogether return to the celebration of the angels when Christ was born, and forget not that Christmas is all about Christ. Let us all pause for a moment and thank the Holy Trinity for a gift undeserved and love unfathomed.

Merry Christmas everyone! Cheers from your Brother Blogger!

LESSONS FROM #AMALAYER

(GIF image from tumblr.com)
The Filipino netizens went furious over a now viral video of a self-confessed “educated woman” who said she was just giving the LRT 2 lady guard in Santolan Station a dose of her own medicine when the latter reprimanded her after she allegedly refused to let her bag checked by the xray machine. The student went ballistic as shown in the amateur video and she is now (oooops!) the latest victim of cyber bullying(pity her). The Jejemon generation strikes back at the student who because of her (unwarranted) act of self defense deemed it necessary to create a commotion to the point of “articulating her thoughts” in a language that she supposedly is very familiar with. The problem lies in the way she treated the lady guard who was (I guess) just doing her job.

What lessons can we get out of #Amalayer?

FIRST, MAKE SURE THAT YOU ENUNCIATE ENGLISH WORDS PROPERLY SO YOU WILL NOT BE A SUBJECT OF PUBLIC SCRUTINY. You’ll never know if there is a video recorder somewhere. #AMALAYER has been trending on different social networking sites ever since the video surfaced on Youtube and facebook. I'm guessing that #Amalayer will win as the buzzword of the year in our country. (Wanna bet?)

SECOND, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. You won’t get reprimanded if you live by the rules. The lady guard’s job is to secure the place from any untoward incident that might cause trouble for everyone inside the station. After the bombings in the LRT stations which are still fresh in the minds of the people, it is only but right for the management and the guards to tighten their security.

THIRD, THE SAYING, “THE END DOES NOT JUSTIFY THE MEANS” REMAINS TRUE. If, (giving the benefit of the doubt to the student) the lady guard really raised her voice at her (which caused her to flare up), she still has NO RIGHT WHATSOEVER TO DO WHAT SHE DID. Maybe she was #NATALAYER. Yet, it doesn’t give her the license to act like Ms. Cherrie Gil (does on her movies and soaps) and demean the lady guard the way she did.

LASTLY, EDUCATION DOES NOT GUARANTEE BREEDING. The student pointed out that she is an educated person, yet, her action, contradicted her own statement. It is never classy to make such act especially in places like that and be a scene stealer in a bad sense.

I read comments from angry netizens about the video and as much as I feel bad for the lady guard, I also feel the same for the student. Her two minutes of fame will go down in the history of the Jejemon nation as having given us the #AMALAYER fever.

What do you think friends? What more can we learn from this incident? Sound off in your comments below.

CONFESSIONS OF A FIRST TIME PROFESSOR

"So what are you going to do when you get back to the Philippines?" My friends bombarded me with this question after I prayerfully decided to take a leave off from my school in Seoul, Korea. I did not decide to stop out in a flash. It took me weeks to finally arrive on it despite of the fears I had. I knew it was the best decision I made at a time when I needed to choose between my studies and my health.

"Well," I said, "I'd be needing to take a much deserved rest for a couple of months, ease my mind and body and think of nothing but happy thoughts and relieve myself from stress that has already taken its toll on my physical and mental health." And if and when I'm a lot better already, I wish to teach in a (secular) university to challenge and inspire young people, the way I know best."
A week ago, I was reminded by a friend that God had answered my prayer. A few months have passed and now, I am in the final stretch of the first semester, encoding my students' grades and signing their clearances. Time flies so fast. And now here I am confiding to you all about how it all went.

Well. Let me first say that I got to experience what we call as "reverse culture shock." "The students' culture these days is a lot different from when I was still on their shoes. I could not understand how in the world some of them could have the nerves of plugging their earphones while their professors are having their lectures or while they are taking their exams. I think I've politely scolded a couple of students in my class for doing such. I DEEM IT DISRESPECTFUL (I think nobody would argue with me on this one).

I taught in two colleges in this local university last semester and it was enjoyable, frustrating, and challenging at the same time. As a first time professor, I was somehow hopeful that my students would be eager to listen to their lessons, as I explained them exhaustively. Yet, the opposite happened. I needed to somehow know where they are coming from so I could speak their language and help them understand what I was articulating in front of them. It was crazy at first.

There was a time when I was teaching English Grammar and we happened to discuss consonants and vowels in passing. The student I asked was looking confused and immediately looked at the notes I gave them. I asked him again to give me examples of vowel letters but he could not. I got frustrated. Should I blame him? Should I blame his high school teachers? or should I blame the Philippine education system for producing high school graduates who could not even answer a very elementary question? Still and all, blaming, I know, would not do anything anymore. I needed to work double time to re-educate them of what they have "forgotten."

Then, I remember why I was there for- to teach, challenge, and inspire the youngsters of today and help them to dream big, dream bigger and to help them tap their potentials and fulfill their dreams. I reminded myself daily of this truth about my calling to teach.

Noise.Noise.And.More.Noise. I bought a lapel microphone to make sure that I was able to get my message across since the noise outside the classroom was actually eclipsing my voice that I could not even hear myself anymore a lot of times. The classrooms were not conducive for learning.  I salute my fellow professors who actually teach and sometimes shout to get their voice heard. Everytime I would teach my classes in that college, I was literally exhausted. And let me say, feeling exhausted is actually an understatement.

I also taught 3rd year students who are going to be (hopefully) educators in the future.  A lot of them were okay. However, most of them could not express themselves in English well. I challenged them not to answer in our lingua franca  but articulate their thoughts in English. And usually, they will give me silence, silence and more......silence. It was tough at the outset. One of my students said that they were not used to conveying their thoughts as fast as they could since some (if not most) of their teachers allow them to speak in Tagalog even when it should be in English. Really???

Before I forget, I taught Humanities to my 3rd year students. It was an arduous task since the subject matter does not only talk about "arts" per se but man being cultured and refined in the meditation of the arts, him, being the center and the manking in the study of Humanities. THE COURSE WAS NOT MY FORTE, but somehow my background helped me in  passing on the truths of the subject matter, since arts and religion are intertwined in the history of humanities. I learned while I was teaching. And hopefully, I did well on it.

As I said, I was shocked at the culture of students (or at least, our students) these days. I am not entirely sure if they know what they want or how to get what they want; or if they really like what they are doing or if they still got the passion to do what they thought they want to do. I WAS CLUELESS.

But then again, I was there to inspire them. I need to rekindle the passion that had them study in the first place. I had to talk with my students and see where they are coming from. I would never forget the time when in our discussion, a couple of my students cried while discussing something in class which happened to touch on their personal lives. Somehow, being a Youth Pastor before helped me analyze and see what is going on with their lives and in my own little ways, uplift their weary and tired spirits.

The moment I first stepped in my students' classrooms, I indubitably told them that I was there not only to teach but also to inspire them. I told them that there is something bigger waiting for them in the outside world; that they should not stop dreaming, studying and knowing more, since, that will be their ticket to success. I know it is not going to be easy. I've felt a lot of times that many of my students have already given up even before they give a shot at fulfilling their dreams. I want to help them get past their fears and do well. I want them to find a better life for themselves under the sun. There are lot more things that I want to help them see and do, yet, I am only me.

Whenever I travel going to the university, I talk to God and tell him to use me as a channel of his blessing, his grace, and his love daily. I know how it feels to struggle as a student. I've lived decades of my life burning my midnight oil for the sake of my future and even left my family to live on foreign soil to fulfill my God-given dreams.
I know how it felt to be abased and not have anything in my pocket when I go to school, take my exam with an empty stomach, and memorize theorems and subjects when my head is filled with countless troubles enough to frustrate and appall my debilitated self.

Modesty aside, I can say that I finished well (at least in my journey as a student). I did persevere and I just pray that, everyday will be a day for me to inspire them. Just when nobody wants to smile at them, I will do it to lift them up. When nobody wants to listen, I'll be a friend to them, lending my time and ears, hear their cries and pray for them. And as I do, I'll look up to the One who taught me how to teach, and in the heavens find my joy in serving the youngsters whom I hope will act as catalysts of change in the present and in the future.

IS EVERYTHING WORTH MY JOURNEY?

I guess when I find my students see the light, behold true happiness in what they do, discover their place under the sun, and live their life in faith, will I be able to ascertain in myself that it's worth every second of it. But for now, I will endeavor to be a good mentor, an inspiring educator, letting the light of my Master Teacher shine for all my students to see.

          Until then.....until then....
